Our strategy: The Lowland Soil Rehabilitation Project (LSRP) is a component of the Global Programme Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security, which falls under the priority topic “A life free from hunger” and the special initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems” of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) strategy 2030.

The LSRP programme is active in one district in Oromia, eight districts in the Afar area, and offers support and training to all districts in the Somali region.

The project has developed the Dry Valley Rehabilitation and Productive Use (DVRPU) approach in collaboration with its regional and local government partners. DVRPU is a holistic approach that integrates social, technical, biological, economic, institutional, and managerial measures to rehabilitate entire dry valleys for the benefit of the inhabitants and their livestock. The DVRPU method is broken down into seven key elements for the long-term regeneration of dry valleys:

1. Dry Valley delineation and satellite identification.

2. Suitability Evaluation.

3. Participatory Community Planning.

Fourth-party User Cooperative Societies, or DVUCS.

5. Financial and technical planning.

6. Measures for land rehabilitation.

7. Use for Productivity.

Assignments and Tasks

A driven and bright intern is needed for the Lowland Soil Rehabilitation Project (LSRP) to work as a PR and communication intern. The intern will support the creation and execution of communication plans to advance the DVRPU strategy and associated initiatives. The intern will collaborate closely with the project team to develop and publish interesting content for a variety of online platforms, including as websites, newsletters, blogs, and press releases. The intern will also be in charge of managing the project’s media database, keeping track of and analysing media coverage, and helping to plan events and workshops.

 Responsibilities:

  • help in the creation and execution of communication plans to promote the DVRPU approach and associated activities.
  • case studies, as well as research and analysis on DVRPU-related subjects.
  • Create and share interesting information on websites, blogs, newsletters, press releases, social media, fact sheets, and briefings, among other communication platforms.
  • Observe and evaluate how the project and associated subjects are covered in the media.
  • Maintain the media database and contact lists for the project.
  • Participate in the planning of workshops and events.
  • Look at the best practises and trends in communication.
  • Work together with the project team to maintain branding and messaging consistency.

Additional responsibilities or tasks

  • At the management’s request, the PR and Communication Intern undertakes additional jobs and activities.
    Position Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with reference to communication, journalism, social sciences, sociology, or a similar area.

Professional experience

  • not required.

Other skills, supplementary knowledge

  • High levels of drive, initiative, self-control, morality, and responsibility.
  • Strong sense of teamwork, a lot of initiative, the capacity to work well under pressure, adaptability, analytical thinking, and a lot of commitment.
  • a focus on accuracy and detail.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills in Amharic and English (C1).
  • Language proficiency in Somali, Afar, or Oromo is advantageous.
  • Preference for an interest in agricultural and environmental concerns.
  • Excellent computer abilities, especially in the areas of social networking and Microsoft Office.
  • An environmental and agricultural development initiative will provide the intern with invaluable PR and communication skills.
  • The intern will have the chance to work with a motivated and energetic team and make a difference in Ethiopia’s lowland areas.
